SUMMARY:Exhibition On Screen: Michelangelo -Love and Death
DESCRIPTION:CLICK HERE FOR TICKETS\nThe spectacular sculptures and paintings of Michelangelo seem so familiar to us\, but what do we really know about this Renaissance giant? Michelangelo’s genius is evident in everything he touched. Beautiful and diverse works such as the towering statue of David\, the moving Pietà in the Papal Basilica of St. Peter and his tour-de-force\, the Sistine Chapel ceiling\, still leave us breathless today. \nSpanning his 88 years\, Michelangelo – Love and Death takes a cinematic journey through the print and drawing rooms of Europe through the great chapels and museums of Florence\, Rome and the Vatican to seek out a deeper understanding of this legendary figure’s tempestuous life\, his relationship with his contemporaries and his incredible legacy. \nThrough expert commentary\, stunning visuals and Michelangelo’s own words\, this film takes a fresh look at a master artist whose life and genius are celebrated in every mark he made. Returning to cinemas to celebrate this iconic artist’s 550th birthday. \nSculptor\, painter\, architect\, poet\, genius – discover why Michelangelo is without a doubt one of the greatest artists of all time.  Directed by David Bickerstaff – Produced by Phil Grabsky.  Runtime 91 minutes. \n  \n5:00 – 6:30pm   Film\n6:30 – 7:00pm   Reception \n  \nAfter the film enjoy refreshments and post-film discussion while you take in the exhibit “Freedom” in our gallery.  Presented by Exhibition On Screen and sponsored by Friends of Franklin Park Arts Center.

SUMMARY:Tanabata(七夕) in the Park
DESCRIPTION:Immerse yourself in this traditional celebration that is one of our favorite summer events!  Connect with new cultural experiences as you try your hand at origami or kirigami\, make a fish print (gyotaku)\, add tanzaku to the trees in our Sculpture Garden and play some games.  End the evening with a lantern float on our pond for a serene and reflective end to our celebration.  All activities take place outside near the Sculpture Garden and Pond. \nColorful Tanabata festivals are held across Japan in early July and August. Among the biggest ones are the Tanabata festivals of Sendai in August and Hiratsuka near Tokyo in July.  Tanabata (七夕)\, also known as the “star festival”\, takes place on the 7th day of the 7th month of the year\, when\, according to a Chinese legend\, the two stars Altair and Vega\, which are usually separated from each other by the Milky Way\, are able to meet. \n**Tea ceremony held at the Arts Center as a companion event; registration required – see separate listing.\n
